Getting ready to finally do it

"Get A Grip!" will cater for the film and television industry supplying everything from sound and lighting, to set dressing, hair and makeup supplies. Ideally I would like to get to a stage where I can offer 24-hour delivery anywhere in the UK. To do this, I would ideally need to be centrally situated but then the film industry is in Cardiff and London - maybe I should just base myself in London? But then what about the overheads and rent-cost?

I would also like to have a couple of studios on site to hire out to students and photographers who are just starting out and have a forum where they can post messages and get together for work. Basically offering all of the help that is seriously lacking for new entrants. I'd also like to have a jobs board that will be checked regularly by the big production companies.

I am aiming to supply the top makeup schools with their makeup kits for students and to have a makeup shop that covers every brand of makeup from around the world. Eventually, I want to have my own makeup school but that's at least 20-years down the line.

The thought of all this is really scary but I have to do it or I'll regret it. I'm also annoyed that I can't get a lot of the makeup supplies that I need, so there is obviously a gap in the market. I keep reminding myself that at one point neither The Gadget Shop or firebox existed and they're now major companies with excellent customer service. Sally Ernst also gave business a go and is now a multi-millionaire at 27! I want a sense of achievement, a job I love, financial security for myself and my parents and something to talk about at my funeral! All good reasons to at least try it. The worst that can happen is that the business fails but at least I'll have taken the risk and can say that at least I gave it a go.

I also want a Millie's Cookies stand and a baby-clothing supply store.

Ok, I've been on the internet for a while now whilst reading the book and so far I have registered an email address for my business, written myself a cheque and created a news article of myself which I have been giggling over for the past fifteen minutes! It's amazing how determined it makes you!!

Offices and focus

Wow - what an exciting business!

I know of a few other businesses in this marketplace. They have an office somewhere central, generally Soho - but the warehouse with all their gear, and the trucks to deliver it, is outside London, in a place handy for a number of motorways to get around the country quickly.

It's likely that your clients will never visit your premises, and just deal with you by phone, email and your website - so it's not necessary to have a real presence near them. You could just have a 'virtual' office so you have a postal address there, and perhaps access to a hotdesk that you can work from sometimes, or meeting rooms you can use. There are a number of virtual offices providers - just google for it.

But it also sounds like you're trying lots of things at once, and that makes it so much more difficult to succeed at any one. I'd focus on one thing, and do that really well.

So you can do some research into each of these ideas and see which one offers the best opportunity. Which one can you start with the funds you have or can raise? Which one has the best prospects for making sales? Which one excites you most? Which one do you have most expertise in?
