Hi Amy,

I was in similar situation to yours, where I used to think that debt was something that I would never be able to get out of, and if i did it would take me a long time. I tried to read up on several books, but didn't find them very helpful. However a friend of mine recommended I speak to a financial advisor that helped her get out of debt, which I did and it has turned out to be one of the best decisions I have made in a long time.

The financial advisor showed me how to pay off my credit card debt quicker, by findng money for me that I didn't know existed (in other words money i was spending on unnecessary stuff). He did this by writing up a professional and very easy to follow debt consolodation plan which shows clearly where I needed to make changes and how long it will take me to get out of debt in my current way of living and how long it would take if I followed the debt consolidation plan. He also managed to get a better premium on my life insurance, and advised me to put the amount I was saving towards the repayment of my credit card debts.

Other than a financial advisor, you can try some of the books out there, although these didn't do me much good, there was one that was reasonably good, which is called 'Credit Card Debt:: Reduce Your Financial Burden in Three Easy Steps'by Alexander Daskaloff.

Hi Jane,

Thanks for your advice, I will definately consider speaking to a financial adviser. You were lucky to have a friend who knew a good one, I will probably have to ask a few of my friends and family if they know of anyone. I can very well relate to your situation. Being a self-employed contracting payroll,accounts and bookkeeping consultant. Just Remember all Entrepreneurs and self-employed people have financial issues!!However they take on debt that gives them a return on there investment compared to consumer debt!!!
Getting out of debt is a useful skill to have!!!
