This is kind of awkward because i don't want to go into too much detail but how many people have start ups where they are manufacturing product (not in the craft sense). Most of the posts I have read are either craft based or service industries,

I have a several ideas in an industry area which i find interesting and i am capable of designing, testing developing the product over time which is a massive saving on starting up but the idea of setting up to manufacture is scary! Even though I’ve worked in manufacturing all my working years! :O

If i out source the work i have to pay other peoples mark up and they may just take the idea and do it them selves?

Any thoughts,

Dave

Manufacturing

Hi Dave
I'm in a similar position myself. Firstly before you show your idea to anyone in manufacturing get them to sign a confidentiality agreement. A solicitor should be able to draft you one. I have background in manufacturing too, but don't want to go to the expense of leasing machinery just yet. I know people say you should keep business in the UK but to be honest I found it so much cheaper to go to China for a quote. We are also lodging a European patent. Good luck with your idea!

Manufacturing 2

Hello,

I quite agree with Caroline. I find that producing items in Europe is far too expensive. I have been living (and still do) in south East Asia for 2 years and I have seen many European (and American ) customers transfering their production in Asia.
I am going to do the same for my own business.
Although, a friend, who already has her business running for 7 years, told me that building your own factory is too much troubles (she did, and she regrets it).
She strongly advised me to look for suppliers (or manufacturers) I can trust and built with them a strong relationship (like : "you do not copy and you are my exclusive supplier"). Ihe idea of asking them to sign a confidentiality agreement is very interesting too.

I will Manufacture

Hello
Have a look at my website
http://web.mac.com/IcterinPE
I need to have something to produce to get my workshop business running.
The workshop is designed to minimize overheads and so require little markup.
I need funding and I need customers from the word "go". Maybe partnering on a new product could be the answer.
