Website - How much could it cost?

Hey,
I am looking to build a web site which will allow customers to create personalised sport clothing. Rather than describing exactly what I want, the following site is a good example:

Website advice - Thanks

Thanks for your advice. I know what you mean about the site, I've seen other systems that do the same job but they all looked very fancy and I'm not sure if I could afford them. Anyway, I'll try to create a detailed brief and hopefully I'll get a reasonable quote. I've also contacted the company that developed the site but they haven't got back to me yet. I'll prob give them a call soon. At the moment I'm still planning things and at the same time I'm trying to contact people to find out where and who they are getting the kit from and what they like or don't like about the current service. However, a lot of them ask me straightaway from my website to see what I have to offer, so I think that I'll have to get myself a cheap site initially just to advertise the products and then add the "design studio" feature.
Would integrating the two systems cause problems?
In your experience with elance do you get any kind of support if things go wrong after the site has been built?
How long do you think it would take for a programmer to develop a site like this. Weeks? Months?
Thanks again for all your help and sorry for asking lots of questions but I have no experience of websites and their development.

The experience i've had with elance has been great. I worked out that they must be paying their programmers around £8 an hour!!! a basic guy who fixes the computer in the uk is usually charged out at around £65. I paid £800 for a restaurant database, with full back end management and a clever mapping system - i.e. you click on a region and it brings up all chinese restaurants etc. plus all retaurants could be on the system at one of 3 levels, e.g. a basic listing, paid for and a premium. It took them about a 3 weeks. All changes were done swiftly and charged on a price up front basis - so £100 here and there to make changes etc. This company had over 100 programmers working 24 hour shifts so if you wanted stuff done real fast they would escalate it!
My guess is the basic component would only cost about £500 - £1000, but you will want a back end and a site to wrap around it. that is where the extra will be as it will involve design work etc.
your best bet is to join elance - i think they charge about £10 so they know you are a bona fida user, and this comes off your first order... and have a look around - you can see what people are asking, and what the prices being bid are - it's all open in an ebay format....
i can promise you it will take longer for you to write the brief than it will take them to do it - as you have to know exactly what wording you want...... or just point them to the site u like and say build that for me...
I commissioned a 6 figure website this year and used a local company here in Jersey (who are one of the best in europe) but i had to go down that route as we really didn't know what we wanted.. i.e. here is what we want it to do roughly... here is the brand guidelines.... go off and build a complete e-commerce site and most of the word i would say was in planning, schematics and only 40% actual programming and html.

Thanks once again for your help, I'll register with elance and I'll have a look at what other people are asking for.
Last and probably extremely naive question....will I have to put in my brief the exact words that I want on a specific page of the site or can I just say to them that I want a page for example describing garment X and that on that page I want text and three images (which I guess I'll have to provide them with) and then edit the page myself through the backend?
I've never seen a brief for a site so I'm not sure how detailed it'll have to be. I'm gonna have a look at elance now so I may find more there.

you will get what you ask for...
you will be able to manually change the text by edititng the raw files buy if ur a web novice then ask them to add the faciltiy to easily edit text...

Just looked at the site... really nice idea. It's a little 'clunky' - more of a tekkie solution, but great concept.
I would get that this would cost around £2000 to get reproduced 'offshore' or around £6000 for someone in the uk to do it.
For jobs like this i would recommend a website called elance (www.elance.com). this is where you post your job requirements and an indication of budget, and developers (mainly in India) bid to do the work. You them produce a shortlist and select a company to do it. Payment is made to the elance website, so your money is safe, and only when you are satisfied do you pay the final instalment.
It's a bit like ebay, so every company has a history and you can see other peoples comments on the work they have done.
A couple of things to note... you will need a very explicit brief - e.g. number of colours of fabric, the style of clothing, the route you want customers to take. how you update, how you receive the files etc. where it's going to be hosted. The Indians are awesome programmers. I've have a few jobs done on elance and I’ve been amazed at the work for the price, but I’ve been frustrated that I didn't think the initial brief through so when it came back i had the 'wish it could do that syndrome'. So think about how it works... map put all the steps on post it's and pretend to be a customer and then you. Show others and get their thoughts.
Finally read the bids carefully - a lot of people give a standard response. ask them as part of the brief to submit similar sites so you can tell if they are giving you a customised response.
