New business idea - recycling toys - feedback please

I am not sure that I would buy second hand toys for my children (if I had any). Probably because I would like to know where they had been, and that they were clean etc, especially in the case of cuddly toys. Books and plasticky things might be a different matter.
I do remenber when I was a kid though, all the child minders in my area shared toys. I think it was some sort of bigger network. What they would do was to somehow (it might actually have been on council level this) club the money together, buy the toys and then request them on loan. Each time a new batch of toys arrived us kids played with them for a couple of weeks. They were then returned, in exchange for a new set of weird and wonderful things. We would always request this one game back again and again, but sometimes we couldn't have it for a while because it was on loan to someone else.

I know lots of people who buy second-hand toys for their children. Two of your main competitors would be: e-bay - where loads of stuff for babies and children (not just toys) changes hands, and also the NCT (National Childbirth Trust) which holds 'nearly new' sales in all the areas where it has a strong branch presence.

What this suggests is that you have a market - but that it might be quite competitive.

Hi I am a mum of a 7 year old and to be honest he loves computers and football, but I do donate lots of outgrown toys and I have found it difficult for anyone to take them, charity shops have got amazingly picky, ofcourse sometimes there will be bits missing and so on and they dont want them (odd I know) but I think if you repair or mend or even squash stuff together and come out with something else that is a service that's different, also the thought of a toy bank that sends toys to africa is a great idea not sure where you can make money there but I think your onto something but needs a little refining. good luck.

I am a shop manager for a big charity shop. i will explain why charity shops may be picky about toys (and children in general):
we have a target for each meter/bay in the shop and usually a bay of childrens clothes/toys does not make as much (or nearly nothing) as much as a bay of trousers, skirts, dresses, etc we are expected to sell at least 65% of all the items we put in each bay, which might bring for example £200 in a Averange selling price of £5 per item. however, childrens clothes toys when price over £2 pounds people find 'expensive' and dont buy, and even if we manage do sell the whole 65% expected would not make as much money as any other department.
the other REASON to avoid putting toys in the shop floor is HEALTH and SAFETY. Toys has to have CE labels, have to be in working condition,clean, etc. depend on the shop we might not have a volunteer especialized on children's toy to spend time testing,cleaning, etc. So all in all it is not worth time/money to have toys selling in a charity.
in my area, which has 11 shops under my area manager umbrela, in central london, only 2 shops does well with clothes department (and this mainly becouse they have a source of brand new clothes donated by a major store). all the other shops dont have such department.
obviously, we try, we put the department up,run for a period of time and check the Shop Floor Management sheet to check which department is making money, and honestly, children's does not pay off.
HOWEVER, you having a specific business dealing with toys, and repaired toys is a fantastic idea. how you are going to do it is another story that i can not answer, but success. P.s.: i might suggest that you may make a deal with some shops to buy any (or a selection) of donated toys for a given price.
the only thing is you have to be available to pick up at least weekly and be friendly and pay a good price. the reason i say weekly is that usually charities do not have lots of space to keep items around awaiting for someone. and the reason i say any toys, instead of a selection, is that when you go there in the shop and you start being fussy about i dont want this or that toys can be very annoying, since the time has spent in keeping items in a space that i could use for something else and them most of it you might not want. (i'd rather bin it instead).
