Busy, Busy, Busy,

I have just written a new article on my own website. I am trying to keep it up but it amazing how much work it takes keeping a website up to date and trying to make it interesting for the visitors (and hopefully customers!) but I am enjoying it. What I am finding somewhat surprizing is the difficulty with which I am having trying to get family and friends to go on the Sumptuosity website's own blog site. I thought that it would be good for a few people that I know (and love) to get on the site and blog away in order to get it going. However, they all seem reluctant, quite techno-phobic in fact! I get personal emails, giving me feedback on the site but they won't blog, why? Are we 'bloggers' a breed apart?

I am busy at the moment fulfilling some orders for my stockists. I have also gone into an agreement with a fabulous magazine called 'Selvedge', whereby we will supply them with six of our Bournville collection Cushions as a special offer for them to give away to their readership and we should get some good publicity. I shall let you all know how we go along and if it was worthwhile. Still it is well worth a go!

I have now found an Accountant for the business. He seems like a good man and someone who we can do business with. So this morning's meeting involved a lot of form filling and the showing of scary passport photographs!

Right time to get back to the sewing machine...

Oh Bloggers

I like the site. To be honest, I have no notion in what you do, the fact you are doing it, enjoying it is a plus, plus, plus. I really wish you every sucess.

chance for some PR???

Hi Ruth,

How are you??

I have just read your article - very enjoyable. Have you thought about submitting this (and other) article(s) to a local newspaper or magazine (perhaps Selvedge as you mentioned?). It makes fun reading and you could use it for promotion of your products and generally create brand awareness.

I'm currently planning to write a column in a newspaper about business in general, but with a slight plug of Velocity Bars at some point during the article. Can't hurt can it??

How many accountants did you look at before deciding. I am currently looking for accountants - any tips?

Accountants etc

Hi Ollie,

The advice in Steve's book about questions to ask was useful. I must admit to feeling very nervous as this was a completely new area of experience for me (I have spent far too many years in education!) but the man we eventually went with was very nice and seems like the sort of person that I can get on with. He is also quite local to us which is an added bonus.

I saw three different accountants and decided upon the first one that I saw (typical).

I read in one of your bloggs or comments that you are currently at Uni? What are you studying? I am very impressed by your business drive. It has taken me years and if it hadn't of been for my partner I don't think that I would have every really considered it. Teachers can very easily get into the mindset of being teachers and nothing else.

Take care and good luck with the business article - go girl!

all thanks to one coffee break

Hi Ruth,

Thanks for your thoughts on the accountants. We are in the process of setting up meetings.

You were right about me being at uni. I'm down in Bath studying Mechanical Engineering. Final year now, and it is less than 2 months until my big report hand in!! Can't believe that everything is going so quickly.

Setting up has always been one of my goals in life. About 5 years ago when I was at the beginning of uni (it's a long course as I took a year out!!), my dream was to one day set up 2 businesses... a nightclub and design consultancy. Now, Velocity Bars has taken some points out of both of those businesses and combined them! Can't be bad eh!!

It wasn't until I met a very wise friend of mine who was setting up a photography business that I seriously considered doing this at a relatively young age. I can still remember sitting around a table with a coffee up at uni about a year ago. My idea was about a week old and I was not thinking seriously about setting up a business. But then we got discussing some rough figures and ways forward and the rest I guess is history!!
