Hi all, I am in the process of starting up a new plumbing business and I guess my main market research question is as follows. Any and all responses appreciated.
When 4 or 5 workmen come out to quote you for a plumbing job, what factors help you decide on who to choose?
I have my ideas but i welcome any others.

Hi Keiran,
It's good to see another trade on here at last!!
I've got some pointers for you and it's what I do and I think they work well since I have a conversion rate of around 57% which is good because I believe the average for trades is lower at around a third!
These may be obvious but a lot of people miss them:
*Turn up on time.
*Be polite, friendly & professional.
*Try to make them laugh
*Dress well and I don't mean shirt and tie, company t-shirt and no ripped or greasy jeans, will do if you haven't got company t-shirts printed up yet go out and buy 5 or 6 plain polo shirts in your planned company colours and wear those to every job as it keeps continuity.
*If you smoke, give up it's bad for you and i wouldn't want a trades person (PC) coming into my house smelling of smoke.
*Get decent business cards made up and letter head to send out estimates on.
*Follow up on estimates about four days after you've sent them, to make sure they got it for one, and that they understand it all.
*Break your estimates down at least into labour and materials, people sometimes ask for it so it'll save you doing it later. put on it how long it will take I phrase it: The work should take approximately * Days
* If you're not going to be doing and making good or redecoration (I don't because I'm not a plasterer or decorator) state that.
*Write down a schedule of works: EVERYTHING you will be doing, It takes a bit of time but it will save problems later
* Get TrustMark Approved
*I also joined the UK Consumer Protection Agency as it shows your not a rouge and I get work from it too!

That's great you were able to get some round to do quotes, have you received them yet? Do they look professional, You are already one up on them since how many do you think do any sort of research? and you're using this site.
As for the demand i think it's very high, well I'm booked up until April so far!!

Hi Keiran,
I have recently been made redundant and have decided to set up my own plumbing business. I took a course in domestic plumbing a couple of years ago and have done bits and bobs for friends and family since, i.e. radiator replacements, tap replacements, outside taps, leek repairs, cistern repairs/replacements. But this is as far as my experience goes.
I am interested to know what kind of training and experience you had before you started up and how you found it initially, having seen your website and read your comments you seem very well established after 6 months.
My plan is to start with small bits which i have confidence in doing and build my experience up from there.
I am planning to do a leaflet drop in my local area, is this something you would recommend?
Any other advice welcome!

May i just say what a great source of info this website is.
I have spent the last couple of years doing a nvq level 2 technical certificate at college and have been doings plumbing bits and bobs here and there for a while. I have been working with my old man developing properties, i.e fitting bathrooms, kitchens, radiators etc. Through college i have experience with lead slate making front aprons back gutters, flashing etc plus installing airing cupbaords, bathrooms, kitchens, sanitation and all the others.
I have noticed since qualifying there is no work out there for anyone leaving college so i am interested in starting up by myself as this seems to be the only viable way of getting any plumbing work, it's got to better than signing on hey?
Any start up advice would be greatly appreciated guys.
Where do i need to start?

Help for tradesmen
Hello everyone
Some great advice on here for tradesmen. I specialise in helping Tradesmen with their paperwork and administrative tasks.
Some tips on running the business side of things. . .
Accounts - As a minimum, do make sure you keep all of your receipts and printed copies of all of your customer invoices in date order. (HMRC recommended having 2 plastic baggies for receipts. (Keep 1 in the car & 1 in the house. Once a week file the receipts from the car in date order & put the empty baggy in your van.) Consider using an accountancy software, but only do this if you are willing to commit the time to log everything you spend and earn yourself. If this sounds like too much of a pain after a hard day's work, find out what your accountant charges for bookkeeping and to file your taxes. (You may find a Virtual Assistant or even a bookkeeper may charge less to log this info in Excel for you.)
Customer Database - Make sure you have a system for logging your customer's contact details. This can range from a simple Excel spreadsheet to a database like Salesforce. You want to log all of your customer's contact details in one place, so you can easily market to past customers. If you have mobile numbers, you can use one of the websites that allow you to send text messages to a list of numbers. If you have their email addresses, you can use mailchimp or another free email marketing website to send out regular offers. If you have their addresses, you can prepare a mailmerge and send direct mail with special offers or to ask for referrals.
Call Answering Services - I highly recommend that you consider using a call answering service. Divert your office and mobile number to a professional call answering service. When you divert your mobile, you can usually choose to have it only divert if you don't answer. Customers appreciate speaking to someone straight away rather than leaving a voice mail message. A call answering service also filters out distractions, so you're more productive when you're working for a customer.
Virtual Assistant - (Now for my shameless plug) A Virtual Assistant can do more than a standard call answering service. For the tradesmen I work with, I answer calls, update the customer database, update their calendar (we use Google calendar which can be accessed from a mobile phone) respond to company emails. I have designed professional quote and invoice templates. I also prepare and send customer invoices. I also help manage a to do list & give gentle reminders of tasks that need to be completed.

New Plumbing Business
Hi Folks,
Thought I would add my 2 peeny worth to this excellent thread.
I started my plumbing business 3 years ago, basically just doing evening and weekend jobs to begin with. This was after completing an NVQ in plumbing and a fair amount of friends and family experience.
Drip busters stated thatstarting on small jobs is a good way to start if experience is limited. I completley agree! The array of fittings and fixtures in a full bathroom is incredible today, some are complex to fit, and can cause all kinds of headaches if not fitted properly. Not only do you have to be a plumber these days, but a bit of a carpenter, plasterer, brickie etc. I work with a team of tradesmen to undertake tiling, electricals, plastering etc. I worry about firms that advertise all these services provided by one person.
Cashflow is God in this busibness as frequently you can find yourself laying out £100's or even £1000's if you have several jobs at once.
All of my business comes from referal which I find keeps me within a band of retired or semi retired people who tend to be a joy to work for and pay promtly. I do not advertise at all, but I have been lucky in this respect, and have a sales background to draw on, so can communicate wih people very well on the whole. ALWAYS CARRY YOUR BUSINESS CARDS WITH YOU. I also concour that leaflet drops are a waste of good trees! Got me one job in 3 years from when I very forst started.
Customer service is King, be there when you say, if you cant phone and keep your customer in the loop, and if you have made a mistake on a job, go back quickly to rectify it, people will respect that.

This training should include all aspects of the system that allow them to serve the customer more efficiently. Most clerks seem to know just the basics, and any anomaly forces them to stop production (sales) and wait for help. Just think about how many times you've been in a line and are forced to wait while a customer pulls out a coupon, is exchanging merchandise, or is trying to buy an item without a barcode. And these are just the basics.
