Want to start business but have young family

Hello all. A friend and I have a great idea for a new business and am determined to do it but have a very young family (3 & 1) and a normal mortgage/outgoings.
This obviously creates a fear factor / risk for me and wanted to ask community any experience on funding a new business while protecting your family from risk and managing to pay the bills...especially in pre-launch and year 1&2 when the business is establishing itself.
