Invoicing ETC

Hi
This is going to sound a really basic question but here goes!!
Say for instance I send a cheque for and invoice of say £200 and i send the cheque on 26th Feb, the cheque prob won't reach it's destintion for a few days and then won't be banked fo another few days after that.
My queston is can i enter on my accounts that the invoice was paid in Feb (the day i sent it) or do I enter it into my accounts when the cheque has been banked in March?
I know this is a stupid question but I just need to know

Personally, I think it would be wise to wait until the cheque has cleared before saying it has been paid. Perhaps you could add a column (if using a spreadsheet) entitled 'cheque banked' then enter the date in the cell just so you're keeping track of it.
I don't actually think from an accounts perspective it would matter - although come month-end/year-end it would be best to have a deadline, then accrue any payments received after your deadline.
Maybe there's someone here who can give professional advice?
