Business Link - any good?

In week one of the book it is suggested we find details of our local business support centre. I haven't yet seen anywhere telling me at what point I should be meeting with them. Is it something I should do early on? Once I've got an idea? Have I missed it in the book or not reached it yet?(although I scanned through the whole of the book on day one!)
Also what sort of help have people had from them? Constructive advice, financial support, mentoring, new contacts? I'm just about to start making appointments to speak to bank managers and wondered if I should speak to the business people first?
All advice gratefully received.

Business Link

Hi Kerry

Business Link is only as good as its advisers - so if you get a good person advising you, then they're great, otherwise they're a bit frustrating for many entrepreneurs!

I have heard very mixed reviews of them. What's most useful about them is that they can help you access grants and other funding schemes, as well as direct you to local training courses.

Best to contact them at about the same stage as you contact potential bank managers.

Am I just being naive?

I bought the book yesterday and am thrilled with it. i intend to work through it diligently!
I have already made a couple of appointments, one with someone who may be able to provide me with suitable accommodation for my venture and another with a potential customer. I have also registered with Business Link and picked up a small business information pack from a bank.
What I am wondering is.... am I being completely naiive thinking I can set up a business with no money of my own? Initially I would need money to pay my share of the mortgage and food etc. (in lieu of salary) and also funds to buy a PC, publish a brochure, join a professional body etc., within 6 months or so I would then need to fit out the premises and have enough money to pay staff until my customers pay me.
Please help with this rather folish question... if it's a non-starter I'd rather know now. By the way, I do have an empty house I could use as security but cannot sell, and I do have a unique selling point that I believe I could get prospective customers to write and say they would use me.
Thanks, yours naively, Di

Starting with little cash

Hi Di,

I'm starting with relatively little cash. I've managed to arrange the business so that I don't need to pay much to get it going - I can get a lot of the work done that I need done in exchange for my services, and I've found a potential employee who's happy to work only as work arrives.

I only have enough cash reserves to last about 2 months (if I spend at the current rate) without income, so I'm currently turning over how I will support myself as I develop my business. I'm planning to start working on my biz fulltime on the 1st of august, but don't expect to get a good income for a few months as I build the business.

My options are:

beg/borrow money from relatives to help me get going
take out a big loan
move in with my grandparents to cut my living costs in half
work part time
work as a contractor.

I really don't want to take out a loan. My golden rule of business is that I should *make* money ;-). Moving in with my grandparents is a definate possibility, but they live ~1hr from my business and it throws a spanner in the works of my renting arrangement. Working part time probably won't be worth while (it's hard to find any work like that in my field), and if I'm working as a contracter I'm worried I'll end up self employed rather than a business owner.

To shut up about myself and focus on your problems again, there's a lot you can do to bootstrap your business without cash. It's standard to pay employees at the *end* of their worked month. If you have problems getting cash out of customers you can use factorising. Depending on what you're doing, you can trade services rather than pay cash. Then again, I'm not running a business yet, so what do I know? =]

no money

Hi Di

I started my business with no money. It depends how much real estate you need and how much equipment. If you already own things such as a computer then you could always start by printing your own brochures etc. I have done all my own plus letter paper etc. And I put out booklets for my students which they buy and I do them all on the computer. Once I was getting some money in the best thing I ever bought and then it was on sale at Staples, was a binding machine. It has paid for itself over and over again. I'm now writing a book for next terms classes and that will be printed up on the computer. And I send out brochures and offers to my mailing list which continues to grow I'm pleased to say. The best thing I ever did as opposed to buy, was to get organised with Pay Pal on my website. And that is thanks to some of the members of this list. I got a lot of encouragement. Better to start small and grow than spend a fortune and be tied into repayments.

printers

Hi Val

Can I ask what type of printer you're using? I'm doing all my own printing myself at the moment as well, but seem to be spending a fortune on printer cartridges! I've been considering getting a load of letter heads printed up in the hope that it will actually save me money in the long run. Sounds like you don't have that problem though if you're even printing out books for your classes.

I've been having a look at your website by the way. Your work is stunning!

Thanks and this is what I'm up to

Thank you both for making me feel welcome by replying, and also re-assuring me that it may all work out!
I was nervous yesterday about saying what i was up to, but here goes: I want to start up my own business providing specialist support to adults with autistic spectrum disorder. I've worked in the field of residential support services for about 10 years. I am of the opinion that the only way that the service is going to be good enough for me, for those that use the service, and for the incredible staff who if they do it right, make all the difference: is if I'm in charge!
I've made appointments to see commissioners that I know need specialist services, and also with a specialist housing association. What I may need money for is either fitting out said house from housing association and employing staff (commissioners may not pay until 1st qtr. but if they need me enough, perhaps will help me out at first). OR I may need to consider buying a house, but I think that'll be too much.
My brother's partner is a graphic designer and has a web partner, and has offered to design everything (I'd have to pay her eventually). Potentially, it's all very exciting.
I'll start a pilot's log if the meetings go well next week! Thanks again for being welcoming!

my printer!

Hi Emily
Thank you for the kind words! I use an Epson Photo 875DC. I actually hate it! Mainly because it has a mind of its own but I have to say it does print on fabric beautifully. I don't use the regular Epsom cartridges because they are so expensive but instead buy compatables from Viking Direct. They are very cheap and can be as low as

cheaper cartridges

Hi Val
Thanks for that. Looks like I'm going to have to source some cheaper cartridges. I might ask my local stationer to start with - when I popped in (for the first time ever) last week he was really really helpful. I'll certainly keep Viking Direct in mind too, but as I'm working full time still, taking deliveries is a bit of a headache.
Printing on fabric sounds intriguing...

While these cost a lot more to start off with than inkjets if you're doing a LOT of printing, they may work out cheaper.

How do I sign up for weekly email newsletters?

Hi, I'm new to this today and I was just wondering if anyone knew how to sign up for the weekly email newsletter as mentioned (on page xx) in the book?

It's probably staring me in the face on screen, but I can't see it.

Thanks, Vicky
