student magazine start up
Hi my name is Mark.
I am from Liverpool u.k., Myself and my brother hope to start a local magazine aimed at students studying in the merseyside area. The launch date if things go well will be October 2008. The mag will be based on student life in liverpool and have a big focus on liverpool student night life. Its main selling attraction will be the array of night out antics that have been captured by our photographer. it will also contain many other fun features. Hopefuly our sales will grow big enough to attract local buisnesses who want to appeal to the local student population therefore producing revenue through advertising. I currently left university two years ago, but luckily I have two younger brothers on board who are currently studying in liverpool and will make sure the content is fresh and up to date. Would appreciate any information, or advice positive or negative. Particualry on
magazine content
target market place (is keeping it local a good idea?)
printing costs
Thanks
Mark.
Thanks for the reply Robert.
As our magazine is aimed at students we hope to keep the price to a minimum. Somewhere in the region of £1.50 to £2.50 based on a 16 to 20 page magazine and printing quotes. I appreciate your thoughts on the local student union but hopefully we can put a bit more mischief and fun in our magazines that the local union is unable to do due to its duty to support the educational side of university (which is quite a big part!)hopefully we can use this as our selling point.
p.s i think the PDF idea is great.
Thanks
Mark
Mark,First of all well done to you and your brother(s) for getting your heads together and coming up with the idea. Though I'm not too sure of what you are trying to achieve. By your description, it seems-to me- as though you want to develop a post 20th century VIZ magazine. Are you? It was totally bizarre, and I'm not too sure if it may still be being published. However you really need to let potential backers/customers know more about the content, because at first glance-(by your description)- it sounds like just a list of student watering holes and your photographer running around Liverpool of a night time looking for trouble spots.
I would be interested to help out with some advice as I have a publications background, and may be able to put you in contact with Pete Johnson (The Author) Check out his bio. He's quite a character Cant help financially though (Sorry, this is not dragons den) Good luck

I like the idea of that, however, some students already get a magazine of similar spec from their local Student Union, obviously each one is different and is catered to each individual University.
Have you thought about how much it would cost for the mag to be produced and then how much you would sell it at? Perhaps even consider a PDF version of the mag that students could download past editions from a website, just a suggestion.
Good luck.
