On the subject of software
I was very glad to see a mention in chapter one of Open Source software. This gave me a warm fuzzy feeling inside, and made me realise I *had* chosen the right book. I'm a bit of an advocate of Open Source software, and use it on all my computers. I appreciate that in places it can be a bit rough around the edges, but there's an awful lot of good stuff out there.
Something that may be useful to those people who don't have deep pockets for purchasing software may be interested in TheOpenCD. TheOpenCD is a collection of the best of the best Open Source software for Windows. Some of the software mentioned on this very website is included on the CD.
Here's their website http://www.theopencd.org/
If you have a fast internet connection and the facility to "burn" a CD, or maybe have a friend or neighbour that has one, you or they can download an "ISO Image" of the CD for free.
If you don't have access to a fast internet connection and a CD burner, no worres there is a link from TheOpenCD website to a company that will send you a copy for just 4 GB Pounds.
Can't say fairer than that now can you!?
Good luck.
I am at the very beginning stages of wanting to start a business. I can do it in my spare time and run it through a website to see how successful it will be.
Here's the problem, although I can produce the product, and have no problems there, I do not know how to set up my own website and how to make it available for the world through the search engines. I know you can pay companies to do it for you, but I know Steve set his up himself using common sense and was able to teach himself.
If anyone could offer any help on where I could start really, I would be extremely grateful.
Thanks
Lisa
Hi Lisa
Here is the web address of a site where you can build a web site yourself http://www.bravenet.com
The site has everything you need to create a basic site (which is free, more complex sites are charged). There is a wizard which guides you through steps and tech support is fast, helpful and also free.
Even I could do it; http://www.petiteperson.bravehost.com
Good luck. Lisa

That may seem an odd question, but I think it is one that is often overlooked these days. It is assumed you have to have one. The first question to ask here is "who is going to look at it?". Are you wanting to bring customers in via a website (is it an advert) or is it to support existing customers? This all depends on your type of business, and some businesses will have a customer base that is unlikely to even consider contacting them via email or looking for a website - although this is likely becoming less common now I do think the question is a good starting point to focus your ideas with.
In my line of work I expect a website to be available, but then I'm in IT! All I really demand of most of these is a few details about what the business does and contact details. Things that drive me up the wall are fancy websites designed by graphic designers that go all look over content - I want to get to the info quickly, so if i don't have Java, Flash or whatever plugin installed on my machine I still want access. This comment echos the one from pdc - be careful as web designers are ten a penny, but good ones are not. It is very difficult to design a good website (it is not simply knocking something up in Dreamweaver and testing it in Internet Explorer - far worse are those companies that show you examples of their work that are simply put together from a Frontpage template).
One thing I would say is that if you do go for a website do it properly. By that I mean get a domain name - this makes your company look better and gives you a more professional looking email address than a Hotmail or ISP based one. It isn't that expensive or difficult - with a bit of research and the correct advise that is. I'll just note again that I work in IT, so this may seem obvious to me! I'm also experienced in web design (although primarily corporate intranets) and considering adding it to my portfolio of service offerings - which I can say without fear of comments about advertising because there are no contact details :-)

Hi all,
I agree with whale tales! (always to the point!) But, my opinion is that most companies need a website today. I am a webdesigner (do not shoot) and I have made some simple websites for companies that sell clothes, metal works, electric appliances, consultants, all of them say that they have at least one client from their website. So, why shouldn't you have that client? The cost can be small, but you have to be careful. Choose a webdesigner you trust as a person, who is near you (for example I am in Greece, how can you reach me if I don't answer my telephone to make that change you wanted to your website?) and a bove all choose a webdesigner you saw his previous work and liked it.
As for the easy to make sites, I am sorry but I don't like them and I don't advice you to use them. Most of them place adverts on your site and these ads are mostly about penis enlargment :)

There are plenty of places you can get free or cheap web space. Especially for a low-tech website which is really just a "look at me" site. If you wanted something more high-tech like an online store which took credit card payments, it's a bit more complex, but not really too bad.
If you want to have a go at creating a basic site yourself then you can use templates to speed things up and do a lot of the work for you. Have a look here http://www.dmoz.org/Computers/Graphics/Web/Templates/ for a cart load of places touting templates. Have a look through some and choose one you like at the price you can afford.
Alternatively you can commission someone to put a site together for you. Be very careful in this area. Web """designers""" are ten a penny, but good ones that can get your message across are a little more tricky to find. Ask friends or again use the net to search http://www.dmoz.org/Business/Business_Services/Design/Graphic_Design/Firms/
Personally I'd go for word of mouth. One thing you might do is ask other people who have similar websites who created theirs for them. Email the webmaster@whateversiteyoulike and they may help you out.
On the subject of search engines, I'd strongly recommend not paying someone to "promote" your site on search engines. The best thing you can do is submit yourself to a few search engines yourself, such as yahoo, google and aol. Also submit your site to the DMOZ (see links above) in a category that most matches your business. In addition there are many community sites that offer a link service where you link to them, they link to you. Also, add your website URL to your signature in emails, and on bulletin boards and in discussion forums on the internet. Don't worry about having to go and find the search engines, once your website is out there, they'll come and find you!
Hope that helps.
