Retainer packages

Hi guys,
I have come up with a retainer maintenance packages for commercial companies, which i would hope bring in a regular income, and would like any comments on it. It would be for shops, offices and warehouses etc.

I've come up with 4 packages for 5,10,15 and 20 hours companies would pay in advance for the hours (as is a retainer) and therefore get a discount on our hourly rate and they would be able to have these hours over either 1 week, 1 month or per quarter.

If they go out of the allowed hours they would get still get a discount off of our hourly rate for subscribing to one of our packages, all depending on which one they have chosen.

The package would cover maintenance, call outs and fault finding

Also we would offer discounts on other services such as testing.

The only thing we wouldn't be able to offer is the guaranteed time to get to the premises. As at the present time we don't have the man power. and i see this as it's biggest problem.

I have absolutely no experience in providing retainer packages so any advice would help greatly.

Hello Paul

I like your idea, I have a shop and we are all electric. I run hand to mouth so I don't have any money to spare, I do have a maintenence budget. These are just my thoughts, if you were my regular electrical contractor and you came to me with this package I would be wary, because you are not 'giving me anything'. Now if you came to me and said I will give you a four hour response and include all your PAT testing each year, then I would seriously consider it. I would not be interested in the discount, I would be interested in the four hour response and the 'free' PAT test, which, of course, I am paying for.

Hi Harry,
Thanks for your comments, Unfortunately I would not be able to offer a response time as i don't have the manpower (which I believe is the only downfall), since it's only me and my trainee,So if i was on a job it would make it hard to just walk out of a customers house and go and sort it out, I know of a company that does this and i must say i wouldn't like it if a tradesman just left, especially if i'd booked a day off work to be there when they came round and then find i'd have to have another day off!!! the best i think i could offer is 48hours maybe 24 hours providing i could get in to the premises out of working hours (which often makes working easier without staff or employees around) and then if i was off ill or on holiday ?!?!?!?!

As for the Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) i do this (as most companies do) on an per item basis so i would not be able to offer it for free whilst working it into the price because a company may have 10 pieces of electrical equipment where an big office may have 700+.

You idea of offering something for free though has got me thinking, such as removal of old electric/electronic equipment under the WEEE directive (however I'll need to look in to this more) and removal of old fluorescent tubes.
