business etiquette
i have been working as a mentor for a charity helping individuals with support in all areas of the life frompersonal issues thru to budgeting and form filling. Now i have started up my own mentoring service but mine is more in depth and i also want to work with people in their own homes. I am also a counsellor and am qualified to train adults in counselling skills. I am still working for this charity for a couple of days a week feeling loyal i do not want to withdraw the support i give them at present, but when i spoke to my boss about what i was doing he seemed to think that i would be putting new business thru them but actually i want my own client base and my own money. As a charity they would not be able to pay me the money i could get on my own but i feel it esential not to tread on their toes, 1) because they have help me over the years, 2) i need them to be a referee 3) i just feel it would be inappropriate.
I feel that there is difinately room for all of us in the helping professions. How can i approach this.
hope im making sense

Hi K
The boss you speak of is he the boss of the charity or of another job?
If it's the charity you need to be clear and tell him that you want to set up on your own with your own clients and will not be able to refer clients to the charity, Except under certain circumstances.
If he's a good guy he should be supportive, maybe a bit dissapointed you're off to do your own thing. But at the end of the day it sounds like you could work really well together referring each other clients, There must be clients they can't help and can send your way and visa versa!
You don't want to step on there toes which is good, but you can't let it stop you from realising your dream, otherwise you'll just end up bitter and regretful?
