Is the coffee any good in here?
Hi!
I just want to introduce myself as a new sign-up to the forum. I got the referral from Caspian Woods book "From Acorns".
I'm in the process of setting up my business at the moment, so I'm in the "Not-trading-but-desperately-trying-to-get-the-word-out-there" stage. I'm reading just about all the material I can get my sticky little mitts on to pick up as many marketing tips and bits of advice that I can (Steve Parks books are on my wish list) and as you can see I'm putting my new knowledge to good use.
I've had a cursory glance at some of the posts on the site, and it looks like a good place to be. It seems I'm not the only one to quit their job to give this a fighting chance. One thing is for sure, doing it this way definitely focuses the mind.
So if anyone out there wants to pass some of their wisdom on to a rookie please feel free.
I look forward to meeting you all, and picking your brains. :)

I'm in a similar kind of situation to yourself, planning my busines launch for early next year - my advice is as follows :
1) enjoy
2) take the time to meet up with suppliers sub contractors - I'm meeting numerous webdesigners, marketing companies etc who I will need to work with when I launch
3) join as many forums as you can find - the knowledge and help out there is immense
4) Lastly and most importantly, there is a book out there for every imaginable situation/problem so as you allude to, keep on reading and expanding your horizons

Bullish about Business, what recession ....
Hello Phil. Thanks for the reply and the advice.
I am really enjoying myself at the moment. I always tend to thrive on and relish new experiences, so I'm in my element really. Apart from the lack of income this really doesn't feel like work at all, and I'm making new "friends" every day.
It really is amazing how cocooned you can become as an employee, isn't it? Making the decision to become my own boss and start my own business has given me a new lease of life.
As for the information gathering, I'm like a sponge at the moment - sucking up every little morsel of advice and information that comes my way :)
I'm guessing that the done thing around here is to start a Blog?
Can you or anyone else give me a few pointers on forum etiquette?
With ref to etiquette, I think it's about being open and honest. An opinion honestly expressed is always valid so long as it doesn't aim to offend and in particular constructive critique is something I'm always open to - in my business (admitedly still in the planning stage) I often go off on an enthusiasm overload and my business partner to be often pricks the balloon but has learnt to do it in such a way as to not dent my pride but rather point out realistic concerns/offer other options.
I've posted on other forums than Flying start ups and gained quite a few important new contacts using the above idea.
As an aside, also try out some business related podcasts - my favourites currently are :
Beermat Radio (Mike Southern hosts this and his books are produced by the same publisher as Steve)
Business Success Tips
You shoud find both easily on itunes
Phil,
Which forums do you use other than this?
I've always been meaning to have a look for something similar but i don't really have the time to test them all, which would you recommend?
